There are individuals who claim, as a form of dismissal, that links between cancer and environmental contamination are unproven and unprovable. There are others who believe that we are obligated to act, as did the surgeon general in 1964, on the basis of the evidence we have before us now. “To ignore the scientific evidence is to knowingly permit thousands of unnecessary illnesses and deaths each year.” This was the conclusion of a recent state-of-the-science review of the links between cancer and the environment.
