Any baby born today or in the past decade who consumed its mother’s breast milk also probably absorbed traces of perchlorate, a toxic component of rocket fuel. A 2005 study of lactating women in eighteen U.S. states found the toxin in practically every mother’s milk. The source of food eaten by the mothers that had been tainted from irrigation water during the growing season. The water had been polluted by perchlorate seeping from defense industry plants scattered around the nation. A breast-fed one-month-old infant will absorb enough perchlorate to exceed all safe levels, perhaps even its lifetime safe level, as determined by a panel of the National Academy of Sciences. Perchlorate is known to adversely affect the thyroid (which controls your metabolism) and other glands of your body.”
