I can’t stand commercial salad dressing. They always have a litany of processed ingredients and usually contain any oil except healthful olive oil. These oils are often hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated, which is even worse. One of the most common olive-oil substitutes in bottled salad dressings is canola oil. Canola oil is a processed, low-acid form of rapeseed oil, which is toxic to humans.

Instead of buying dressings full of harmful preservatives and oils, make your own at home! I prefer to make each serving fresh right before I pour it on my greens. Use the following recipe to spark your creativity.

Honey Mustard Dressing

1 tablespoon honey mustard (or plain mustard or dijon if you prefer)
3/4 tablespoon olive oil
3/4 tablespoon flaxseed oil
3/4 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Place all ingredients in a small mixing bowl (or empty salad bowl) and whisk.
Makes 1 serving of sweet and tangy dressing.

Use organic ingredients where possible (and I recommend Annie’s Organic Honey Mustard, as they use the minimum of ingredients and no preservatives).
